On August 18, the ABS modified material factory of Sinochem International (600500.SH), a central chemical enterprise, in Yangzhou was opened and put into operation. This new factory is an important part of Sinochem International's ABS China strategy. It will expand Sinochem International's industrial footprint in the field of engineering plastics and further promote the company's new material industrialization process.

Liu Hongsheng, general manager of Sinochem International, said: "The operation of Yangzhou ABS modification plant has opened a new chapter in Sinochem International's ABS industrialization. Modified materials in the ABS industry chain are closer to the application of the end market and have higher added value. It can play the role of supplementing the chain and extending the chain. We will take this as a new starting point to create a strategic and good product with market scale, technical content, brand value, close to the market and strong driving force in the field of modified ABS. "

The new factory is located in Sinochem Yizheng New Material Industrial Park, with a total investment of about 500 million yuan and an area of about 65 acres. It is planned to build 56,000 tons/year of ABS and PC modified materials in two phases. It is operated by Sinochem Engineering Plastics (Yangzhou) Co., Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary.

The first phase of the project put into operation this time has an investment of 210 million yuan. Construction will start in April 2021, with a production capacity of 24,000 tons/year of ABS modified materials. The second phase of 32,000 tons of production capacity is scheduled to be put into operation in 2023.

During the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, more than 4 million tons of ABS production capacity will be released in China, and supply and demand are expected to reach a basic balance by then.

In terms of modified ABS, the domestic production capacity is about 2.5 million tons, and the import dependence is about 30%. With the vigorous development of downstream markets such as home appliances, electronic appliances, and automobiles, the domestic modified ABS market has a broad market space, especially in the mid-to-high-end market. Enterprises with innovative technologies and complete product categories will occupy a more favorable competitive position.

In recent years, Sinochem International, based on ELIX’s international leading technological advantages and business model, and at the same time, has made use of Sinochem’s internal synergistic advantages of ABS, PC and other basic resins, accelerated the promotion of ABS China strategy, and deployed modified and polymerized ABS projects in China to create Polymerization to modified upstream and downstream integrated ABS industry chain.

In terms of modified ABS, Sinochem International will customize the production of modified ABS products with different specifications, such as heat-resistant ABS products, by flexibly adjusting the equipment configuration of the production line according to the needs of different ABS modified formulations at the newly put into operation in Yangzhou. In terms of polymerizing ABS, Sinochem International has previously established a wholly-owned subsidiary, Sinochem International Polymer (Lianyungang) Co., Ltd., and plans to build a 400,000-ton/year ABS plant in Lianyungang. At present, the project has entered the EIA publicity stage.

The project covers an area of about 655.5 acres. After completion, it can produce 290,000 tons/year of general-purpose ABS products, 20,000 tons/year of flame-retardant ABS products, 20,000 tons/year of extrusion-grade ABS products, and heat-resistant ABS products. 40,000 tons/year, PC/ABS alloy 50,000 tons/year (including 20,000 tons of ABS resin) and other types of resin products.

Liu Hongsheng said that in the future, the company will rely on domestic and foreign production bases such as Spain, Lianyungang, Yangzhou, etc., integrate global technology and market resources, master core technology competitiveness and customized service capabilities, and coordinate and integrate raw material supply, product iteration, formula development, and high-end fields. The advantages of global certification and market development, etc., create an ABS industry layout with global supply chain capabilities, multi-brand, high efficiency, specialization, and differentiated competition.
