In China, Kao focuses on combining the characteristics of locally produced products, starting from three aspects: simplifying the design of packaging containers, optimizing container styles, and introducing and applying innovative technologies. It conducts detailed analysis and research on product packaging, and continuously promotes packaging components and containers. Reducing the amount of plastics, at the same time, we will deeply explore environmentally friendly materials such as recycled resin and the packaging application technology of refills and replacements. Clothing washing products such as the "Jieba" brand, which is popular among consumers, not only introduce new technologies into the products to improve the washing power of the products, but also reduce the water consumption during the washing process. At the same time, it also developed and launched refill products, striving to significantly reduce the amount of container materials.

Since 2009, the Kao R&D team has continuously improved and optimized the packaging of "Jieba" washing powder, and gradually reduced the amount of plastic used in product packaging materials. In 2021, in order to further reduce the amount of plastic used in packaging, Kao's packaging material R&D team conducted a layered disassembly and detailed analysis of the material structure of the packaging bag. On the premise of ensuring the required strength of the material, the innermost layer The LDPE layer adopts a new type of PE resin and further reduces its thickness. The introduction of this new material has greatly reduced the amount of plastic used in the washing powder packaging bag by 10% on the basis of the original material, thus moving towards the direction of plastic reduction in the thin-walled plastic packaging bag of washing powder. An important step has been taken. During the advancement of this project, through full linkage and cooperation with material manufacturing suppliers, the trial production and thin-walled mass production condition analysis were efficiently completed, ensuring the rapid commercialization of new technologies.

Develop new technology to effectively promote the minimization of plastic consumption

In the process of actively promoting the "plastic reduction" initiative of packaging, Kao has been actively researching and developing innovations to reduce the use of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polyethylene (PE) in product packaging since 2013. technology. At the same time, we continue to study the bottle body design of plastic bottle containers, in-depth analysis of plastic container molding conditions, and continue to challenge the goal of minimizing the amount of resin used in the bottle body.

The Kao R&D team has developed Kao's unique resin blow molding pressure control technology with a new design idea. Through the application of this technology, the resin can be uniformly distributed on the irregular-shaped container, thereby effectively reducing polyethylene terephthalate. The thickness of the body of the (PET) plastic bottle reduces the amount of PET plastic used by 22% compared with that before the improvement. Currently, the containers developed using this technology are widely used in the “Biore” brand cleansing water and cleansing oil produced locally in China. in the packaging of the product. At the same time, the resin blow molding pressure control technology has also passed the invention patent application.

In addition, Kao has also carried out detailed calculation and research on the stress bearing of polyethylene (PE) plastic bottle containers. After a series of calculation adjustments, the width of the formed ear material is innovatively reduced, and the container's resistance to environmental stress is improved by dispersing the stress of the bottle body, thereby realizing the thinning of the container body. In the future, Kao will fully use the new PE container bottle from the product packaging of "Biore" and other brands. This move is expected to reduce the use of PE plastic by 24% compared with before the improvement.

In the process of these two technological innovations, through repeated negotiation and cooperation with container manufacturing suppliers, we have overcome the conditions for mass production stability and the setting of production management specifications. Streamlined outer carton materials

In addition to the promotion of plastic reduction in product packaging, Kao (China) has also continued to promote the simplification of the use of materials for the outer carton of washing products. Since 2010, on the basis of gradually updating 100% of the outer carton materials to environmentally friendly FSC paper (forest management certified paper), Kao (China) has cooperated with the carton manufacturing plant to focus on the internal and external structure of the carton for washing products and The material has been continuously optimized and adjusted, from the change of the shape of the partitions in the box to the cancellation of the dividing cardboard, with the improvement of the cardboard structure and the adjustment of the cardboard core material, parallel testing and evaluation are carried out from the perspective of multiple schemes, and the rapid progress has been made. Full technical cooperation with container manufacturers to explore the reduction of pump head components

While Kao (China) has independently developed innovative technologies for the structure and molding of packaging containers that reduce plastic and carbon emissions, it has also vigorously promoted cooperation with Kao packaging container manufacturers since 2014. Optimize and improve mold making and structural design. On the basis of fully ensuring usability and stability, we challenge the simplification of the components of the complex structure container. Aiming at the traditional 7-part emulsion dispensing pump structure, the Kao R&D team and the pump head manufacturer jointly invented a new structure of 4 parts through comprehensive analysis and discussion on design adjustments. After several mass production trials, quality evaluations and technical improvements, the newly developed pump head structure can not only be used normally, but also reduces the force required for pressing, realizing the environmental protection of carbon reduction and emission reduction, and also improving the usability of the container. The technological innovation of reducing the injection parts of the emulsion discharge pump from 7 to 4 can effectively reduce the amount of resin by 31.5%. Kao (China) will also continue to expand technical collaboration with container manufacturing plants and suppliers to strengthen innovation and creation of plastic reduction and carbon reduction.

For a long time, Kao (China) has followed the Group's environmental protection goals and is committed to reducing environmental load and energy consumption in the production process throughout the life cycle of products. After a series of optimization of packaging materials, from 2015 to 2021, the amount of packaging plastics has been reduced by more than 20%, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 28,000 tons.
