Lithium-ion batteries are the most common in consumer electronics, used in everything from mobile phones to power tools to electric cars.

Battery wear refers to a loss of capacity and/or an increase in internal resistance.

The latter is not a well-known concept, but over time, the number of amperes a battery can produce gets smaller and smaller, and eventually the battery simply can't generate enough power quickly enough to operate the appliance, even if it's empty.

Try to buy your batteries when you need them; lithium ions start to age the moment they leave the assembly line.

However, by following these tips, you can get more life out of the battery you have.

Charge cycle

One cycle is when the battery is fully charged and then completely depleted.

Lithium-ion batteries are usually rated for 300-15,000 full cycles.

However, you often don't know what brand/model of battery is in the item you are buying.

Partial cycles will give you more cycles before the battery runs out, so when possible, do partial discharges and then recharge.

For lithium-ion batteries, do not intentionally drain the battery before recharging.

Storage/operating temperature

Keep the battery as low as possible.

Don't store cell phones or other portable lithium batteries in your car on hot days, and keep them cool when not in use (bring portable tool batteries indoors, not in a shed/garage with no air conditioning).

If possible, park your electric vehicle in a cool place or in a garage with a good temperature.

Also, your pocket has a temperature of about 30ºC, so if you're in the office or at home, for practical use, keep your phone on your desk and out of direct sunlight.

The charging characteristics

Charge the battery as slowly as possible.

For mobile phones, use a charger rated at about a quarter of the battery's capacity if you can.

For power tools, try to use a slow charger instead of the fast charger that comes with many power tools.

This is not always possible, but it is often possible.

After charging, do not allow any devices to connect to the charger.

In fact, your goal should be up to 80% (more on that below).

Discharge characteristics

Try not to abuse your battery and get as much power out of it as quickly as possible.

For electric cars, it is not good for the battery to press the accelerator pedal frequently.

Similarly, power-hungry games can quickly drain a phone's battery.

If your phone gets hot from high power use (as opposed to the sun or high room temperature), it's a sign that you're punishing the battery.

For items you don't use every day, check your batteries from time to time to prevent them from self-depleting when not in use.

This is not an obvious problem for electric vehicles and mobile phones, but for power tools and power boxes, it is best to check the battery every few months and charge it to about 50% for storage.

The depth of the charge

Unlike most other types of batteries (especially lead-acid batteries), lithium-ion batteries do not like to be stored at high charge levels.

Storing it above 80% after charging accelerates capacity loss.

So if it will get you through the day/week, charge the battery to 80% or less.

For batteries that have been stored for a long time, charge them to about 50% and check them every once in a while.

The depth of discharge

According to many sources, lithium ions don't like to be released completely.

So, whenever possible, try to avoid discharging your battery below 25%.

If unavoidable, charge up to 25% as soon as possible to minimize the time near empty load.

Battery Maintenance

1. The whole charging process includes three stages: quick charging, continuous charging and trickle charging.

After the first two stages, the charge will appear to be 100%, but the actual battery has not reached saturation.

The remaining capacity can only be replenished by tiny pulses of current, which usually take 30-40 minutes.

2. There is no problem to charge the phone with a computer, but the unstable current output caused by the use of the computer will cause some damage to the battery.

Opting for "Charge only" on Android phones is a great way to speed up charging with minimal impact on your phone and computer.

In addition, do not remove the speed limit of the controller. Although it can improve the speed of some cars, it will reduce the life of the battery.

Under normal circumstances, a new mobile phone generally has a certain amount of electricity, but the lithium ion battery will enter the hibernation state after being placed for a period of time, so many people mistakenly think that the new mobile phone can be used after being charged for 12 hours. In fact, the current mobile phone can be restored to its normal capacity as long as 3~5 times of normal charging and discharging.

Switching on the power supply for a long time will not activate the lithium ion battery but will cause great damage to the battery itself.
