SABIC, a global diversified chemicals company, has announced the successful launch of a new project as part of its TRUCIRCLE™ sustainable solution to accelerate the implementation of the plastic circular economy.

Allied Bakeries, a UK-based bakery supplier, uses recyclable packaging on its Kingsmill No Crusts 50/50 bread products.

St. Johns Packaging uses SABIC certified recyclable polyethylene (PE).

The joint project was launched in November 2020 and trials were completed at St. Johns Packaging's manufacturing facility in China in May 2021, leading Kingsmill to launch the bag in the UK market in September 2021 using PE film containing a certified recyclable polymer.

St. Johns Packaging is an integrated flexible Packaging company that uses SABIC's PE resin for its products around the world.

This bread bag contains 30 percent post-consumer recycled materials.

Using advanced recycling technology to convert the plastic mixture into pyrolytic oil, the new polymer is produced with the same purity and quality as traditional plastics.

SABIC's recyclable materials are produced under the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS programme using a mass balance accounting method.

The program aims to track the flow of materials across a complex supply chain from raw materials to final applications through a set of predefined transparency rules.

The bread bag is just one of our products, but it is an important initiative that shows how food producers and packaging suppliers are working closely together to drive much-needed change.

We do need to achieve more recycling of soft plastic materials so that more materials can be used for sustainable projects.

We want every consumer in the UK to know that bread bags can and should be recycled, simply by taking them to a bigger store.

"We expect the UK government to follow this lead and include soft plastics such as bread bags in household curbside recycling programmes as soon as possible."

SABIC certified recyclable polymers are an integral part of TRUCIRCLE's sustainable products and services. This solution also covers recyclable design, physically recycled products, certified renewable products based on biology, and a closed-loop program that uses recycled plastics for high-quality applications and prevents high value old plastics from being discarded.
