From 2021, France and Greece ban the production and use of single-use plastics

At the beginning of the new year, the European Union banned the export of "foreign garbage", South Korea plans to reduce the output of plastic products and increase the recycling rate, Australia promoted the implementation of the "foreign garbage" export ban through the "Recycling and Waste Reduction Act 2020", and France stopped producing single-use plastics Products, Greece prohibits the purchase of disposable plastic products. As the policies of many countries continue to increase, the new version of the "plastic limit order" in 2021 uses recycled materials, adopts a recyclable design, and reforms the value-added tax income tax. In 2021, more supportive policies will be introduced in all parts of the world, including China, and recycling is poised to explode.

01.France

The first ban in France in 2021: From January 1, 2021, disposable products such as disposable plastic straws, tableware or blenders will no longer be produced. The person in charge said: It is expected that by 2040, disposable plastic products will gradually disappear from daily life.

In addition, other disposable plastic items will gradually disappear from life, such as plastic beverage bottles, balloon sticks, plastic glitter and packaging paper scraps.

From 2021, expanded polystyrene boxes used by fast food restaurants to pack food such as skewers have also been included in the list of prohibited items. In addition, plastic bottles will no longer be used in various gatherings, cultural or sports activities, but these products can also have a six-month inventory clearance period, provided that these items are manufactured or imported before January 1, 2021.

"We will see them in circulation for another 6 months, but the good news is that these products will stop production." said Juliette Franquet, president of the French "Zéro déchet" association.

In fact, because of this epidemic, this policy has also made certain concessions.

Originally planned to be implemented in January 2021: "The ban on plastic packaging of fruits and vegetables weighing less than 1.5 kg" has been postponed for one year in order to give manufacturers time to adapt.

The straws that were originally planned to be banned in January 2020 are now available in washable versions (such as stainless steel), as well as paper, bamboo or even straw versions. But there are also some shortcomings. The paper straw experience is poor, and it will soften when you drink it slowly...

"We are cautious about the "good methods" that look great. They are sometimes harmful to the human body, and some are actually less environmentally friendly. The best way is to encourage repeated use, cleaning and recycling." Juliette Franquet suggested.

Other bans will gradually take effect in 2021, such as fast food restaurants banning the distribution of free plastic toys.

The end result of this plastic restriction order is that in the future, plastic containers containing shampoo, shower gel or washing powder will also disappear from our homes.

02, Greece

The Secretary-General of the Greek Ministry of Natural Environment and Water Resources Aravosis announced on December 30 that the public sector’s procurement of single-use plastics will be terminated on February 1, 2021, an important step towards achieving the goal of "plastic-free".

According to regulations, from February 1, Greek public institutions will terminate the purchase of plastic tableware, plates, straws and beverage stirrers, polystyrene foam food and beverage containers and lids, and all non-biodegradable plastic products. The Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy stated that the ban is "an important step in Greece to end the use of single-use plastics." The comprehensive ban on plastics will be implemented on July 3, 2021.

The European Commission has issued a ban earlier, requiring member states to ban the use of 10 single-use plastic products by 2021. Under this policy framework, Greece is actively promoting legislation and plans to phase out the use of disposable plastic products in 2020.

The Greek government will increase the cost of using plastic products as its primary measure. In 2019, the price of each plastic bag in Greece will be increased by 125%, and the proceeds from the sale of plastic bags will be transferred to the Greek Recycling Agency for environmental protection projects. This move has immediate results. According to a survey released by the Greek Retail Consumer Goods Research Institute in February this year, compared with 2017, the use of disposable plastic bags in Greek supermarkets fell by 98.6% in 2019, a decrease of 1.75 billion. At the same time, the Greeks purchased more than 17 million reusable eco-friendly bags, and the distribution of biodegradable plastic bags has soared to 37 million in 2019.

According to the Greek government plan, from July 1, municipalities across Greece must equip all playgrounds and municipal sports facilities with drinking water taps so that bottled water is no longer needed.

Starting from January 1, 2022, Greece will levy environmental taxes on plastic cups and lids and disposable food containers, and the income will be used for a special "green fund" to take action to protect the marine environment.

The Greek government stipulates that by 2023, manufacturers of disposable products must establish their own recycling systems or participate in existing recycling systems.

Sarelax, head of the "Aegean Breathing" organization, pointed out: "Shops and restaurants need to be more adequately prepared for the plastic restriction order. We look forward to the availability of cheap plastic alternatives as soon as possible." Mary, head of the Greek environment department Na Papadakis said: "We are still working hard. In the future, Greece will continue to promote recyclable trash cans in areas where people are concentrated, such as restaurants, markets, and supermarkets, to increase people’s awareness of garbage classification. At the same time, the government is actively cooperating with All parties cooperate to speed up the introduction of alternatives to plastic products."

This year is the first year of a comprehensive waste ban. With the support of the ban on plastics and the national recycling plan, will waste plastic recycling usher in a new change?
