The Ukraine crisis could lead to higher resin prices

According to market observers contacted by Plastics News, the crisis in Ukraine could lead to higher resin prices in North America and other parts of the world.

Global financial markets plunged and commodity prices rose in response to Russia's military attack on neighboring Ukraine on Feb. 23. The price of West Texas Intermediate crude rose nearly 6% to more than $97 a barrel as of 11 a.m. Feb. 24. Us natural gas prices also rose nearly 3 per cent to more than $4.60 per million British thermal units (BTU). The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell nearly 600 points (nearly 2 percent) over the same period.

Higher oil and gas prices could have a macro impact on resin prices. Commodity resin prices have been on an upward trend since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020, finally starting to fall back in late 2021. The Ukraine crisis could change that trend.

"With the world oil market experiencing significant uncertainty, the Situation in Ukraine is likely to push some resin suppliers to increase prices on top of higher energy prices," Phil Karig, a market veteran, said in an email. Karig is the managing director of Mathelin Bay Associates in St. Louis.

"The key question is how long geopolitics will affect the market," he added. "A brief conflict in Ukraine is unlikely to overwhelm our domestic supply-demand resin fundamentals for long. But a longer conflict, accompanied by an escalation of sanctions against Russia and Russian counter-actions, could leave the global and resin markets in an unpredictable situation."

In the short term, "we need to consider how oil prices will evolve," added Industry consultant Esteban Sagel in an email.

"Polyolefin prices in Asia are highly correlated with oil prices," said Sagel, principal of Chemical & Polymer Market Consulting in Houston. "So as oil prices go up, polyolefin prices in Asia will go up as well."

He added: "The impact in North America is that it will prevent us from cutting prices. The US needs to export a lot of polyethylene and Asia needs to be part of the export equation. Prior to this crisis, polyethylene prices in North America needed to fall to be competitive in Asia. With prices going higher in the region, our prices may not come down as much as some people expect."

Polypropylene prices are also likely to remain high, driven by polyethylene prices, Sagel said. He notes that the pp-to-PE ratio in North America has been between 1.15 and 1.25 since 2018.

The ratio "has been at 1.25 in recent months, but AS long as supply in the region remains tight, I don't expect it to go below 1.15. Therefore, if PE prices remain high, PP prices will follow a similar trend ".

In a Webinar on Feb. 23, Plastics News economics editor Bill Wood said the new pressures will worsen existing problems for individual businesses. "The uncertainty we are facing is not likely to lead to cost reductions." He said.

"Expect more of the same, only more intense," he said. "If you get caught up in worrying about a million possibilities, you end up stuck with more. Stay focused, stay balanced, think about one or two other things."
