For instance, in healthcare, biodegradable materials can be used to 3D print customized medical devices that degrade within the human body or environment after fulfilling their purpose, eliminating the hassle of subsequent disposal.

The application of biodegradable materials in the medical field holds significant importance. Items such as bone pins, bone plates, sutures, tissue engineering scaffolds, and drug delivery carriers can all be manufactured using biodegradable materials. Take sutures as an example: traditional sutures require removal after wound healing, causing inconvenience and discomfort to patients. Biodegradable sutures, however, dissolve and are absorbed naturally after wound closure, eliminating the need for removal and reducing patient discomfort and infection risks. In tissue engineering, scaffolds made from biodegradable materials provide structural support for cell growth and tissue repair. As the tissue regenerates, the scaffold gradually degrades, avoiding the need for secondary surgery to remove it.

Strong Sustainable Development Potential: Many biodegradable materials originate from renewable biomass resources like starch and cellulose, reducing dependence on non-renewable resources such as petroleum. Additionally, their production processes generate relatively low carbon emissions, contributing to a low-carbon economy and advancing sustainable development. Excellent Application Performance: Certain biodegradable materials exhibit superior mechanical properties, processability, and thermal stability, meeting diverse application requirements across various sectors. For instance, PBAT-PLA blends used in packaging films combine excellent flexibility and tensile strength with biodegradability.

Higher Costs: Currently, the production costs of biodegradable materials generally exceed those of conventional plastics. This is primarily due to high raw material costs, complex manufacturing processes, and limited production scale. These high costs hinder the widespread adoption of biodegradable materials. Degradation Condition Constraints: Biodegradable materials require specific environmental conditions for degradation, such as suitable temperature, humidity, and microbial environments. In natural settings, these conditions are often difficult to fully meet, leading to slowed degradation rates or even complete failure to degrade. For instance, in low-temperature, low-microbial-activity environments like the deep ocean, the degradation time of biodegradable materials can be significantly prolonged. Performance gaps: While some biodegradable materials exhibit excellent properties, certain materials still fall short in specific performance aspects compared to traditional plastics, such as durability and barrier properties. This limits their application in fields demanding higher performance standards.

With the increasing global emphasis on environmental protection, biodegradable materials hold vast development prospects as a key solution to plastic pollution. In the future, ongoing technological advancements are expected to reduce production costs and further enhance material performance. On one hand, researchers will continuously explore new raw material sources and production processes to enhance the efficiency and quality of biodegradable material manufacturing. For instance, genetic engineering techniques can be used to modify microorganisms, enabling them to efficiently synthesize biodegradable materials with superior properties. On the other hand, intensified research into the degradation mechanisms and environmental impacts of these materials will optimize their design and application, ensuring effective degradation under diverse environmental conditions. Furthermore, policy support and guidance will play a crucial role in advancing biodegradable materials. Governments can establish relevant regulations and standards to encourage enterprises to increase investment in the R&D and production of biodegradable materials, while guiding consumers toward eco-friendly products. With concerted efforts from all stakeholders, biodegradable materials will play an increasingly vital role in future green development, helping us create a cleaner, more beautiful Earth for all.
