Biodegradable Materials: A Beacon of Hope for a Green Future

Industry News > Biodegradable Materials: A Beacon of Hope for a Green Future

In today's society, environmental issues are becoming increasingly severe, with plastic pollution emerging as a global challenge. Traditional plastics are difficult to degrade in natural environments, and their long-term accumulation has led to severe ecological damage. From oceans to land, plastic waste is ubiquitous. To address this crisis, biodegradable materials have emerged, offering new hope for solving plastic pollution and becoming a key element in sustainable development.

Definition and Mystery of Biodegradable Materials

Biodegradable materials refer to substances that can gradually decompose under the action of microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, and algae, ultimately transforming into environmentally friendly small molecules like carbon dioxide and water. This process resembles nature's magical transformation, allowing “plastic” to reintegrate harmlessly into the ecological cycle. Compared to conventional plastics, biodegradable materials contain special chemical bonds in their molecular structure, such as ester bonds and amide bonds. These bonds undergo reactions like hydrolysis and oxidation when exposed to enzymes secreted by microorganisms, leading to the material's gradual decomposition. For instance, polylactic acid (PLA), a common biodegradable material, features ester bonds in its molecular chains. When attacked by microbial enzymes, these bonds break down into smaller molecular fragments. These fragments are then absorbed and utilized by microorganisms, ultimately converting into carbon dioxide and water.

(1) Naturally Degradable Materials: Gifts from Nature

Starch-Based Materials: As the primary form of stored energy in plants, starch is extremely abundant, with corn and potatoes being common sources. Through chemical modifications such as esterification, etherification, graft copolymerization, or blending with other biodegradable polymers, the processing and mechanical properties of natural starch materials can be enhanced. Despite issues like high hygroscopicity and suboptimal mechanical properties in pure starch materials, their low cost and complete biodegradability enable widespread applications in disposable tableware, packaging materials, agricultural films, and pharmaceutical capsules.

Cellulose-Based Materials: Cellulose, the most abundant natural organic polymer on Earth, primarily originates from wood, cotton, and hemp. It inherently possesses excellent biodegradability. Common cellulose-based materials include paper, cotton and linen textiles, as well as chemically modified regenerated cellulose (e.g., viscose fiber, cellophane) and cellulose esters (e.g., cellulose acetate). These materials are extensively used in packaging (paper, cellophane), textiles, functional films, and cigarette filter materials (cellulose acetate).

Chitin / Chitosan: Chitin is the second most abundant polysaccharide in nature after cellulose, primarily found in the exoskeletons of arthropods and fungal cell walls. Chitosan is produced through the deacetylation of chitin. Both exhibit excellent biodegradability, biocompatibility, and biological activity (e.g., antimicrobial properties). In biomedicine, they are used for drug delivery, tissue engineering scaffolds, and medical dressings. In food preservation, they play a significant role. In agriculture, they serve as plant growth regulators.

(II) Synthetic Degradable Polymers: The Fruits of Technological Innovation

Bio-based Synthetic Degradable Polymers: The monomers for these polymers are primarily or entirely derived from renewable biomass resources.

Polybutylene succinate (PBS): Polymerized from succinic acid and 1,4-butanediol, with monomers obtainable through biofermentation. PBS exhibits excellent processability, thermal stability, and biodegradability, finding widespread application in packaging films, agricultural films, foam materials, injection-molded products, and fibers. Notable PBS brands like PTT MCC Biochem's BioPBS™ are renowned for their good processability and compostability, frequently used in coffee capsules, paper cup coatings, and flexible packaging. Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA): Formed through microbial fermentation using diverse carbon sources like sugars and vegetable oils, polymerized under PHA synthase catalysis. Members of the PHA family exhibit diverse physicochemical properties due to the variability of their R-group side chains. These include short-chain PHAs (SCL-PHA) like PHB (stiff and brittle), medium-to-long-chain PHAs (MCL-PHA) such as PHHx (more flexible), and copolyester PHAs (e.g., PHBV, PHBHHx) that significantly enhance toughness and processability through copolymerization. PHA exhibits biodegradability in diverse natural environments (soil, water bodies, household compost), excellent biocompatibility, and tunable properties, making it widely applicable in high-end food packaging, disposable products, agricultural films, and medical materials. For instance, DBC's Bioten™ PHA1033, as the pioneer of commercial PHA emulsions, achieved significant breakthroughs in the large-scale manufacturing technology of 10-nanometer-level PHA emulsions. This has strongly promoted the application of microorganism-based PHA materials in cutting-edge fields such as biodegradable coatings, eco-friendly adhesives, and high-performance packaging coatings. Polylactic Acid (PLA): Polymerized from lactic acid monomers, which can be obtained through microbial fermentation of renewable carbohydrates. PLA exhibits excellent biodegradability, biocompatibility, high transparency, and superior processing properties. It is widely used in 3D printing materials, disposable tableware, packaging films, fibers, and medical implants. NatureWorks' Ingeo™, one of the world's leading PLA brands, delivers performance comparable to traditional plastics while significantly reducing carbon footprint, driving PLA's commercial adoption in food packaging, textiles, and other sectors. Petrochemical-based Synthetic Degradable Polymers: Monomers primarily derived from fossil resources, engineered with molecular structures to achieve degradability. Polybutylene Adipate-Co-Terephthalate (PBAT): A random copolymer of adipic acid butanediol ester (aliphatic) and terephthalic acid butanediol ester (aromatic), combining the biodegradability of aliphatic polyesters with the mechanical properties of aromatic polyesters. Characterized by high flexibility, high elongation at break, good processability, and compostable degradation, it is commonly used in various packaging films (shopping bags, agricultural films), garbage bags, and blend modifications. BASF's ecoflex® is one of the representative PBAT products, often blended with other renewable materials (such as PLA or starch) to manufacture flexible films like organic waste bags and food packaging. Polycaprolactone (PCL): A semi-crystalline aliphatic polyester produced via ε-caprolactone ring-opening polymerization. It exhibits excellent biodegradability and biocompatibility, though its environmental degradation rate is relatively slow. PCL features high flexibility, excellent biocompatibility, and good compatibility with other polymers. It finds significant applications in medical materials (drug controlled release, tissue engineering) and as a modifier for thermoplastic polyurethanes. CAPA™, originally from Perstorp (now Ingevity), is a well-known brand name for PCL. Its product series, renowned for superior processability and biocompatibility, are widely used in bioplastics, adhesives, and medical devices. Poly(glycolic acid) (PGA): The simplest linear aliphatic polyester, produced by polycondensation of glycolic acid or ring-opening polymerization of lactide. PGA exhibits high crystallinity, high mechanical strength, excellent biodegradability, and biocompatibility. Its core characteristics include high strength, high modulus, biocompatible degradation products, rapid hydrolysis rate, and outstanding gas barrier properties, though it has a narrow processing window. Primary applications include medical absorbable sutures, orthopedic fixation devices, drug delivery systems, and high-barrier packaging.
